How to change blades on a Luba
Learn how to change the blades on your robot mower and get the most life out of every set. In this guide from Robomate, New Zealand's trusted robot mower experts since 2018, we share three simple tips — including how to double your blade life by swapping discs, safely replacing blades, and the two-hole trick for extra use.
How to Change Blades on Your Robot Mower
After a couple of months of regular mowing, your robot mower's blades will need some attention. But before you rush to replace them, there are a few simple tricks that can help you get the most life out of each set. Here's everything you need to know about changing and extending the life of your robot mower blades.
Tip 1: Switch the Discs Around First
Before replacing your blades entirely, you can swap the two cutting discs around. Because the discs run in opposite directions, switching them over allows you to use both sides of the blades — effectively doubling their lifespan. To do this, simply unscrew the three 2½ millimetre Allen key screws located around the centre core of each disc, and swap the discs over.
Tip 2: How to Replace a Blade
When it is time to actually change a blade, follow these steps:
- Get your replacement blade — it should come with a screw included.
- Use a hand tool, not a drill — fresh blades are very sharp and it's easy to cut yourself. A hand tool gives you much better control and is far safer.
- Orientation doesn't matter — it doesn't matter which way up you install the blade.
- The blade won't screw all the way in — and that's completely intentional. The blade is designed to rotate freely so that if it hits a rock or something solid, it simply flies out of the way rather than cracking the entire disc.
Tip 3: The Two-Hole Trick for Extra Blade Life
If you want to be really efficient, you can get up to two extra lives out of each blade by using the second mounting hole. If you look closely at the blade, only half of it is actually exposed to the grass at any point in time. By repositioning the blade to the second hole, you expose the fresh, unused half — giving you significantly more value from every single blade.
